cultural insights for all

is promoting inclusion at work only the responsibility of organizations?

Everyone talks about inclusive culture and what organizations should do to support it, but not many discuss what we, as individuals, can do to feel included.

Yes, creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected is extremely important, but we also need to remember that this environment consists of individuals like you and me, who also need to take personal responsibility to feel included. 💡

When I first moved to Singapore, I struggled to feel like I belonged. Yet, I chose to actively participate and take specific actions to enhance my sense of inclusion. I believe it’s time to broaden the perspective beyond the common narrative of inclusion as something organizations provide and emphasize how individuals can actively contribute to their own sense of belonging.

So, how can we enhance our sense of inclusion at work? Before taking any action, let’s reflect on our mindsets. Here are 3 key aspects to consider on an individual level:

🌟 Positive outlook towards OTHERS - When you sense that others are sending you 'exclusion vibes', do you take the time to explore why this might be happening? Sometimes people's behaviours aren't personal and may come from not knowing how to engage with you or being unfamiliar with certain interactions.

🌟 Positive outlook towards SELF - Are you overly worried that you might face discrimination because of your identity or being part of a non-dominant group? Try to treat yourself with more respect and don’t expect others to view you differently.

🌟 Positive outlook towards HUMANITY - most of the time, our personal reality is a reflection of our thoughts. Some argue that humans are inherently bad, while others believe they are good. Which side do you align with in this equation?

What actions do you take to support your inclusion at work? I invite you to share your experiences or strategies in the comments below. 🙏
